Triple 3 Tool
Triple 3️⃣3️⃣3️⃣ Tool
One of the things I’ve created for myself to help make better decisions over the last few years is the Triple 3️⃣3️⃣3️⃣ Tool.
These are my 3️⃣ tidbits on it:
1. What is it?
The Triple 3️⃣3️⃣3️⃣ Tool is designed to help you make considered decisions based on your values by considering the consequences of your actions over three timeframes: short-term, medium-term and long-term outcomes.
3 minutes
3 weeks
3 years
It’s a way to “surf the urge” and avoid rash decisions by gaining perspective on the short, medium and long-term impacts of your actions.
2. Why does it matter?
While some decisions can be impulsive and serve the now (and not the future) - sometimes you need that ice-cream on a scorching day!), the Triple 3️⃣3️⃣3️⃣ Tool helps you step out of the present and consider how your decisions impacts your future self.
The best results often come from long-term thinking through good regular habits.
3. How to use it?
For important decisions, ask yourself:
3 minutes: How will you feel in 3 minutes?
3 weeks: How will you feel in 3 weeks?
3 years: How will you feel in 3 years?
Compare your answers across the three time horizons and reflect on how your potential decision aligns best with your values and goals.
Take exercise as an example, you might not feel good in three minutes, but in three weeks and three years regular exercise will result in a healthier you.
I find the The Triple 3️⃣3️⃣3️⃣ Tool can help nudge you to take action in the case of exercise when you may not otherwise want to.
