Are you born with confidence or can you master it?

Are you born with confidence or can you master it?

It is a skill that you can master.

I should know, because I had to overcome my fear of public speaking to appear on live national television to speak about tax!

These are my 3️⃣ tidbits about building confidence and keeping confidence [note the use of “ing” in build and keep].

1. Growth Mindset

When you are building confidence what matters the most is having the belief in yourself to figure it out eventually. Embracing a growth mindset (over a fixed mindset) is the key to unlocking your confidence. Carol Dweck’s book, Mindset is a book that delves into the concept of a growth mindset.

2. Building confidence?

Building confidence doesn't necessarily require taking big actions. The confidence in yourself is built through doing tiny tasks consistently to build trust in yourself.

Confidence is like a muscle you are working out.

But just because you are doing the tiny tasks consistently, doesn’t mean you will keep sustaining your confidence. You need to regularly reflect on the small tasks you've completed and acknowledge your progress which helps to slowly change your identity and how you view yourself.

3. Keeping Confidence

Once you build confidence, doesn’t mean you keep it.

There will be times when things get tough and a lack of confidence can start to creep in.

The "Lolly Jar" is a place where you store past experiences of all the times you conquered a fear and came out the other end. I like to use a real Lolly Jar (but you can use a figurative one in your mind) and combine that with folded up post-it-notes of past successes.

When you feel a lack of self-confidence, grab a lolly from your Lolly Jar and open up a post-it-note to remind yourself of a past success to help keep that confidence for a current challenge or overcome a challenge (and get a sugar hit too!).

Thought Provoking Quotes on this week’s topic

Swati Sharma

The best way to gain self-confidence is to do what you are afraid to do.

Dale Carnegie

Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy.
