To wing or not to wing an interview

To wing or not to wing an interview

… that is the question.

Whether it is a job interview, an important 1-on-1 conversation with a team member or a live 📺 TV interview, winging it isn’t going to give you the best chance of success on a regular basis.

When you are preparing for an important conversation, like a job interview, you need to make a good first impression and you need to make it count.

Preparation is the key, being interviewed is like practising for an exam when you don’t know exactly what the questions might be.

These are my 3️⃣ tidbits for nailing a job interview:

1. 🦾 Confidence

Own the moment and speak with confidence and conviction. Maintain eye contact with the camera (if you are doing a remote job interview) or the other person if you are meeting in real life.

Build confidence by doing the work beforehand.

Make your you have pre-game ritual!

2. Clarity

K.Y.A.

Know Your Audience.

This is crucial. Use the language that is suitable for your audience. If your job interview is for a technical role, using a bit of complex jargon might be OK.

3. Relatable

This one’s tricky, but if you can, weave in anecdotes into your responses to the questions put to you, as this will create connection with your audience.

Be prepared to think on your 👣 feet.

Remember, being relatable is about connecting on a human level, knowing the content isn’t enough!
